Carbon Capture Coalition Statement on NPC Roadmap 2019

December 12, 2019 | News

The following statement can be attributed to Carbon Capture Coalition Director Brad Crabtree:

“We welcome the growing number of companies and organizations evaluating strategies for advancing carbon capture as a crucial component of meeting midcentury carbon emissions reduction goals. As the United States ramps up carbon capture deployment, it is helpful to have in-depth assessments such as the National Petroleum Council’s roadmap for carbon capture, use and storage that can inform policy development and planning.

As our nation has seen with other emerging low and zero-carbon technologies over the past two decades, when robust and comprehensive policies are enacted to drive investment in technology demonstration and deployment, innovation increases, performance improves and costs come down significantly, further accelerating deployment and commercialization of those technologies in the marketplace. As the NPC roadmap shows, we have the carbon capture technology today to begin ramping up deployment, but a broad portfolio of policies is needed similar to what has enabled the widespread commercialization of wind, solar and other critical technologies.

The Carbon Capture Coalition released a comprehensive federal policy blueprint in May 2019. This portfolio of substantive recommendations reflects a consensus of the Coalition’s over 70 companies, unions and environmental and clean energy NGOs. It comprises a plan for action today – one that leverages the opportunity presented by last year’s congressional reform and expansion of the federal 45Q tax credit – and should be enacted in the near-term to ensure that the long-term vision of the NPC roadmap is realized.”
