Carbon Capture Coalition Responds to DOE Request for Information on Deployment-Ready Carbon Management Technologies

On February 1, the Carbon Capture Coalition responded to the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Request for Information (RFI) on Deployment-Ready Carbon Reduction and Removal Technologies.  Responses to the RFI will guide DOE as they implement the bipartisan Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act, which contains $12.1 billion in funding over five years for commercial deployment, large-scale demonstrations, and activities to enable deployment of carbon capture, removal, transport, utilization, and storage technologies.

Economywide deployment of carbon management technologies will be critical to meet the Administration’s goals of net-zero emissions in the power sector by 2035 and a net-zero economy by 2050, as well as preserving and expanding family-sustaining, middle-class jobs in the energy and manufacturing sectors.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act marks a major step forward in fostering economywide deployment of carbon management technologies and DOE has a critical role to play in putting innovative industries on a pathway to meet 2030 commercialization targets through enabling pilot scale to commercial demonstrations, lowering technology risk and attracting private capital in the process.

It is estimated that the provisions enacted by the Infrastructure Investments and Jobs Act, in tandem with proposed bipartisan enhancements to the 45Q tax credits in pending climate and energy legislation, would result in an estimated 13-fold increase in carbon management capacity and annual CO2 emissions reductions of 210-250 million metric tons by 2035.
